West Orange's Fall Starts With a Library and a Theater

Two September restaurant openings got the headlines in West Orange this fall. The bigger change to everyday life is two public spaces. The Horizon West Branch Library opens its doors on Saturday, October 10. Garden Theatre on Plant is staging live shows again almost two years after it closed. The library is free to walk into. The theater runs through a partnership with the City of Winter Garden. Both will shape a lot of Friday nights and Saturday mornings from now through December.

The new restaurants fit into that schedule. Flatlands Bar & Grill and Seasons 52 give each end of West Orange a new place for dinner before or after the things that are actually on the calendar.

Saturday, October 10, from the market to the drum circle

On this Saturday, three of the season's anchors overlap, so it's the easiest place to start.

  1. 8 a.m. The Winter Garden Farmers Market opens at the Downtown Interactive Fountain & Pavilion, 104 S. Lakeview Ave., and runs until 1 p.m.
  2. 10 a.m. The ribbon is cut at the Horizon West Branch Library, 4657 Hamlin Groves Trail. Lobby entertainment begins at 10:15.
  3. 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Family performances at the library, with solar observing at noon between them.
  4. 1 p.m. A guided nature walk on the library grounds.
  5. 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Storytime, then a beekeeper at 2:30, then a drum circle at 3 to close the celebration.
  6. Evening. Footloose: The Musical is in its final run at Garden Theatre on Plant. Performances are October 8 through 11.

The OCLS event listing says the grand opening is for all ages. Library card signup, a LEGO demo, a scavenger hunt, fiber arts and crafts, and bee bookmarks run all day.

What the library adds to Horizon West

The Orange Observer called the Horizon West Branch "long-awaited." The building covers 20,000 square feet and cost about $18.3 million to build. Its theme is nature, with a focus on the environment and the sciences.

The details show who the building is for. It has two teaching classrooms: one for technology classes and one for fiber arts and STEM. It also has a public media lab, three large community rooms that can be rented for events, and two study rooms. Outside, a nature walk includes a permanent StoryWalk and a musical garden.

The rentable community rooms may matter most here. In a part of the county where a lot of new public space so far has been shopping centers, a booking calendar for meetings, parties and club gatherings is a real addition.

On the practical side, the OCLS event calendar shows the branch open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 11. As of this week, the library's location page hasn't posted regular weekly hours. OCLS posts updates at ocls.org/horizon-west-updates.

Plant Street got its theater back, and the city is a partner this time

Garden Theatre on Plant closed unexpectedly in late 2024 after its former operator dissolved because of financial problems, ClickOrlando reported. Winter Garden then approved a plan to bring the venue back with plays, movies, concerts, camps and one-off performances. In April, commissioners chose DNA Productions as the new presenting partner. DNA Productions is part of DNA Event Creative, which has produced events and conferences in Central Florida for 20 years.

The new season opened in August with a concert, "The Rocket Man Show." Here are the dates on the schedule now, all at 160 W. Plant St.:

  • Footloose: The Musical runs through October 11.
  • Haunted Illusions with David Caserta plays October 22, 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Wild World of Animals plays November 14, with shows from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • It's A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play runs December 10 to 13 and December 17 to 20.

The radio-play format is a nod to the building's beginnings as a movie house. The city's season announcement says programming dates can change, so check the theater's own site before buying tickets.

Where the two new dinner spots fit

Both restaurants are close to one of the two anchors.

Flatlands Bar & Grill opened Monday, September 21, at 124 Ruby Red Place in Flamingo Crossings, on the Horizon West side. It's open 4 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Brunch runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The restaurant leans into the area's history. Its website describes this part of Florida as "a landscape of citrus groves, rail depots and small towns" before it became a destination. The menu includes salmon, Cornish hen, Dover sole, risotto, steaks and a raw bar. Brunch includes avocado toast, pancakes and a smoked salmon bagel. The menu is posted at flatlandsbarandgrill.com.

Because of those weekend brunch hours, a library morning on October 10 can end with lunch nearby without driving back toward downtown Winter Garden.

Seasons 52 opened Friday, September 25, at 3143 Daniels Road inside Winter Garden Village, according to the Orange Observer. It's a good fit for a sit-down dinner before an evening show on Plant Street.

The rest of fall, week by week

Once the library and theater are on the calendar, the city's recurring events fill in around them. Here is the order of the next seven weeks, based on the City of Winter Garden calendar.

Every Friday in October and November: Fridays on the Plaza at the Centennial Plaza Gazebo, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. October dates are the 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. November dates are the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th.

Every Saturday: the Winter Garden Farmers Market, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 104 S. Lakeview Ave.

Week of October 12. City Hall Halloween light shows start Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Week of October 19. Oxygen Yoga & Fitness Horizon West holds its grand opening Monday the 19th at 8810 Seidel Road, with free classes during its first week. The Orange Observer reports the studio offers hot yoga, fitness and Pilates. Haunted Illusions is at the Garden Theatre on Thursday the 22nd. The Halloween Spooktacular preschool program runs Friday the 23rd, 10 a.m. to noon, at the Jessie Brock Community Center, 310 N. Dillard St. The City Hall light shows run again on the 23rd and 24th.

Halloween weekend. The farmers market holds a Halloween celebration on Saturday, October 31. City Hall light shows close out on the 30th and 31st.

November 7. The farmers market's Health & Harvest Festival.

November 14. Wild World of Animals at the Garden Theatre, matinee and evening.

November 21. A Thanksgiving celebration at the farmers market.

November 28. The farmers market in the morning, plus the Downtown Small Business Saturday Celebration & Sidewalk Sale from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Hamlin's events page also lists Horizon West events: Pet Fest on October 17 at 14111 Shoreside Way, a Homegrown Market by Home State Brewing Co. on October 18 and November 1, and Flavor Fest Horizon West on November 14, with tickets marked "coming soon." That page lists no years, and some of its dates don't match each other, so confirm with organizers before planning around them.

Still waiting on a date

Saucy by KFC is planned for the former PDQ space at Flamingo Crossings Town Center, 2224 Western Way, Suite A. The Orange Observer's July report said no opening date had been announced, and we haven't found one since.

The other missing date is the library's regular weekly schedule. By the time the grand-opening weekend ends on October 11, OCLS should have posted it. That's when it becomes clear how the new branch fits into an ordinary weekday in Horizon West.

At The REvest Group, we keep track of how new public spaces like the Horizon West Branch Library change daily life in the neighborhoods around them, and that kind of local knowledge also matters when you're thinking about a home's value. If you're in Horizon West or Winter Garden and want to know how this fall's openings fit into the local picture, schedule a free consultation and home valuation with our team.
